The Boat Yard
This body of work developed during a year of visists to Ridge Wharf boat yard in Wareham, Dorset. These repeated visits revealed a landscape in constant transition, where changing light, weather, and the movement of boats offered new perspectives with each return.
The photographs examine the unique forms, colours, and textures of the boat hulls, alongside the improvised arrangements created to protect them from the elements. Ropes, tarpaulins, wood, and other materials form quiet still-life compositions scattered throughout the yard, revealing the practical ways owners shield their boats from weather and time.
The work also considers the afterlife of these vessels. Many are left to deteriorate, exposing the environmental and economic challenges of recycling or repurposing abandoned boats.
